Sustainable supply chain management

Responsible business practices are no longer limited within the factory gates. Companies, retailers, financial institutions are increasingly expected to manage their environmental, social and governance (ESG) performances also along the supply chain of their products and services. Governments are expected to "walk the talk" and adopt responsible purchasing strategies.

Why?

Why should a manufacturing company, retailer, financial institution or government care about sustainable supply chain management? read on

Manufacturing companies, especially in the consumer goods sector such as textile, food & drinks, ICT, are under great pressure from both consumer organisations as well as their (international) retail clients. They need to comply with the code of conduct of their clients and in most cases international standards such as SA8000 (http://www.sa-intl.org/). Besides increased pressure from investors and other stakeholders regarding "improved supply chain performance" is becoming a main driver for taking action.

It is not only manufacturing companies that are faced with these requirements, but also retailers. Consumers are more and more interested in knowing under which conditions the products they purchase are manufactured. Is child labour used to produce these products? How much pollution or carbon emissions are created to put these products on the shelves?

Even financial institutions are facing supply chain related questions from their clients, including private investors and pension funds, also want to know in which sectors their money is invested by their financial institutions. Is the money used to finance cluster bombs or manufacture products that have health hazards?

As major purchasers, governments are developing responsible sourcing / green purchasing strategies to promote the availability of "environmentally and socially acceptable" products and services. Many governmental agencies purchase services and products taking into account their environmental and social aspects along the supply chain.
